KIRAN organizes various events to spread awareness about domestic violence in south asian community, also to reach out to the victims.

Our Successful Events in 2009

The Honorable brothers of the NCSU Colony of Iota Nu Delta Fraternity Inc., NC State Women's Center, The Movement Peer Educators, and Kiran Inc. Present...

A seminar on Domestic Violence in the South Asian Community
Wednesday December 2nd from 7-8:15pm
Talley Room 3118

Attendees will learn the cultural dynamics of Domestic Violence against Men and Women in the South Asian community, as well as hear a personal account from a survivor of this violence. Resources and calls to action will also be discussed.

Iota Nu Delta Fraternity Inc. was founded nationally in 1994 as the first South Asian Interest Fraternity in the world.

Kiran Inc. is a multi-cultural, non-religious, community based, South Asian organization. We promote the self-reliance and empowerment of South Asian women & men who are in crisis through outreach, peer support, and referrals in a confidential manner. We spread awareness in the community on household and domestic violence faced by South Asian women & in many cases also by men. We cooperate and collaborate with organizations in the USA and elsewhere with similar objectives.

Countries in South Asia include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Though there are differences in language, customs, and religions across these countries, these regions share many basic cultural and historical similarities.

The Movement Peer Educators are a trained group of male and female NCSU student activists and peer education leaders available to facilitate workshops on the prevention of sexual and relationship violence including stalking and cyberstalking. You may remember them as the group that did the hand painting in the tunnel against domestic violence, or the group that now organizes Take Back the Night!

Movie Night

On Oct 27th, Thursday, 5:30pm

The movie is based on the novel of same name by Suchitra Bhattacharya and the book was inspired from a real life incident in which a female journalist Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti saved a housewife from public harassment.

Romita (Rituparna Sengupta), goes shopping with her husband Palash(Abhishek Chatterjee). Romita is molested by a gang in front of her husband in front of a crowd. Jhinuk (Indrani Haldar), a schoolteacher passing by, comes to the rescue.

This incident and the fight to get the men punished, creates rift in their respective families and in that process the womens of the movie learn many lessons about men and life as whole.
